Wishing Well (a false economy)
Mark Langley

My sculptural practice endeavours to occupy the space between the real and the imagined and often explores recurrent themes associated with time, memory, fate and illusion. I will invariably use items that are recognisable and familiar, such as mirrors, dice, shells, coins etc. These artefacts possess a certain inescapable history that lends them a sense of permanence and truth. Through the making process I attempt to create a dialogue between an object and its relationship with other substances and materials…that may in themselves be temporary, fluid or ephemeral in nature. This process allows me renegotiate an object's 'place in the world', subverting a pre-existing connotation or function in order to create a new association – and in doing so, seduce the audience into a narrative that may propose an alternative truth.
